Home foreclosures and “Sheriff Sales” in Ramsey County have more than quadrupled in the past three years. Hundreds of families in our community are now homeless and many more are at risk. Organizations serving the homeless have been overwhelmed by the needs of these displaced families. As the weather turns colder, the demands upon the emergency shelter organizations will only increase. Those unable to find housing will be forced to seek shelter on the streets.
To help address this community need, the Sheriff’s Office is hosting a fundraiser on December 12th & 13th to assist the organizations serving homeless families. As the holder of a Ramsey County “Permit to Carry a Handgun” you are being invited to shoot at the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office indoor firearms range. This will be a structured shoot supervised by certified firearms instructors and additional volunteer Ramsey County Sheriff’s Deputies. Each participant will be allowed to fire 50 rounds of their own ammunition over a 40 minute session. The range is located at the Ramsey County Law Enforcement Center in Saint Paul at 425 Grove Street; there is plenty of free parking in the lot in front of the building.
For some of you, this may be the first time you have fired your weapon since you took your training. This is a great opportunity to reacquaint yourself with your handgun – improving your safety and reducing potential accidents. Free gun locks and safety information will also be available.
The fundraiser will give you a chance to compete against the Sheriff’s management team. During each session, either I or one of our three Undersheriffs will be on the line competing for high score. Each person who outscores our shooter will receive an “I out-shot the Sheriff” certificate.
The suggested tax-deductible donation for this experience is a $150 check payable to one of five Ramsey County organizations serving homeless families: Catholic Charities, Union Gospel Mission, YWCA of St. Paul, The Family Place, and Safe Zone. Please bring your donation / check when you arrive for the shoot and we will deliver it to the organization of your choice.
